Elisa Hunter

Elisa Hunter was rushed to the K.H.M.H. and when we checked this afternoon, she was in surgery. We understand that she sustained head and body injuries, and from what is seen in the footage, she is lucky to be alive. A blood specimen was taken from Elrington’s driver, Amir Garcia, and he was served with a notice of intended prosecution. The Minister of Foreign Affairs maintains that his driver tried to avoid hitting Hunter, but there was nothing else he could do.

Wilfred Elrington, Minister of Foreign Affairs

“This was a case where she was obviously walking in the middle of the road at a very busy time of the day. And she escaped one vehicle, the guy from UNDP; they stopped as a matter of fact and waited until the police came and the ambulance came—which I thought was very decent of them—they have their names and their phone numbers. And they can tell the police fairly what happened. It was a case where she walked out of a vehicle and into the middle of a road, which is a classic way for traffic accidents to occur. Everybody who does law knows that it is a classic way that people normally die from traffic accidents, when you walk out of a vehicle into the middle of the road. But that doesn’t negate the fact that it is always a traumatic and sad situation. She was going to work and caught up in her own thoughts and I don’t know…it was just one of those very sad mornings.”

“I just want to be clear. In your opinion, your driver was not in the wrong and he exercised all caution that can be reasonably expected on a highway?”

Wilfred Elrington

“He couldn’t have done better. He tried, he tried. He is very distressed and distraught. He’s an excellent driver, an excellent driver and he did all in his power. He was blowing his horn, he brake the vehicle, he swerve the vehicle and she came right into it. He’s an excellent driver and proceeded quite responsibly, but she just came off the bus, dodged one vehicle—the vehicle that passed immediately ahead of it—and then walked right into us.”

According to Elrington, the accident has highlighted the need for speed-bumps on the road where persons are forced to cross regularly.
