Today, it was a very sombre gathering which listened to that explosive recording released by the Cervantes family. The call came in on the night of October eighth. Vilma Cervantes answered, and the call was put on speaker and recorded on her daughter’s phone. The caller, whom Cervantes swears is Castillo, promises to call back in a week. He did, but she could not take the call and asked Castillo to call back. Since then there has been no contact with the man Orange Walk Police say is a stone cold killer. Castillo asked for the matter to be kept discreet, and now it will be anything but. Still, Ramon Cervantes Junior says that they waited as long as they could before speaking.

“The question is how long to wait and this case is very important for the nation. And as for the evidence, I don’t know; if he has it and he wants to clear his name, I think it is in his interest to produce it—whether we disclose it or not—it is in his interest to produce the evidence.”

“Now Mister Cervantes, the claim that is being made here is that this was an attempted hit on your life. Can you comment as it relates to that? Obviously you are the standard bearer for a division up here in the north and what this says for the entire political scene and perhaps…let me let you respond.”

“It’s not only sad for me, it is sad for the country. To the point where we have gotten as a nation, it is very worrying as a nation. My life, I am only one person. I think the whole country is in danger; our whole tradition of supposedly peace and cooperation with one another; I think our whole social fabric is in danger. As for my life, as a God fearing man, I fear the face of no man or his skin. I only fear God. I know that my life is in danger and possibly even the lives of my family and friends and those close to me because clearly I am marked for death by very rich and powerful people. But we have to go on cause God will decided my death soon, not man.”
Late this afternoon, the office of the Deputy Prime Minister, issued a release. It reads: “Hon Gaspar Vega, Deputy Prime Minister, learned of a Ramon Cervantes family press conference broadcast today by a certain media house. At that press conference a voice recording was played containing the most outrageously false and defamatory allegation against the DPM. Hon. Vega condemns those that caused the recording and allegations to be played, and those that carried the broadcast. The DPM warns that no other media house should carry or in any way further circulate the reprehensible libel against him. He has already consulted his lawyer who will take action against anyone that ignores this warning.”
