There is some movement, though little happiness, in the sugar industry tonight which has been in crisis for months now resulting in a delay of the 2014 sugar crop. News Five has confirmed that over the weekend, B.S.C.F.A. directors were tasked with going to their individual branches and taking a vote on whether to sign on to the agreement with ASR/B.S.I. There is information that at news time tonight, a majority of branches have voted yes. But while that is the case, it is not a moment of jubilation in the industry. This morning, the airwaves sizzled with anti-G.O.B., anti-ASR/B.S.I. sentiment. Many farmers, apparently, feel that when Prime Minister Dean Barrow withdrew his support for the B.S.C.F.A. publicly last week, they were left with no option. Today the B.S.C.F.A.’s Chairman Ezequiel Cansino confirmed that the Association is caving in, even if somewhat reluctantly.

“To my point of view and understanding, to what the cane farmers have been voicing, maybe that is the case. But I think that many cane farmers were willing to start the crop with this agreement since before, let’s say, in December when we presented the agreement. We have heard, especially from the Orange Walk Branch, that they are not happy with that. But they are still signing. They are willing for the B.S.C.F.A. to start this agreement and start the crop. But also we have some branches that are signing, but they want to be out of the B.S.C.F.A. I understand that some branches have finished with their voting, but the reaction of the cane farmers right now, up to what information I received, is positive that we sign this agreement with B.S.C.F.A.”
