Arising from ASR’s new stance, there is some speculation that the company is seeking to punish the organization for its insubordination, so to speak. And following from that, there is also some speculation that the company is seeking to deal the B.S.C.F.A. a death blow. At this point farmers are desperate to start the crop due to financial considerations, and if the B.S.C.F.A. can’t, then there is every likelihood of defections en masse. But interestingly, Barrow says that won’t be allowed to happen, not under his watch.
Prime Minister Dean Barrow
“If there is any thought of playing the waiting game in an effort to as it were discourage the B.S.C.F.A., I am here to say that that can’t be allowed to happen. I am here to say that what I described as the real B.S.C.F.A. must be protected…must be safeguarded. They have been in existence for fifty-five years, and there is no way that any of us can view with anything but extreme disquiet any possibility of the complete demise of the B.S.C.F.A. I continue to say that the pickle I which it finds itself is the making of those who led it wild. But that’s history. The challenge now is to ensure that the BSCFA takes its place at the table, plays a central role in the start of the crop. I will do whatever is necessary to ensure that that’s how things will go.”
