Clean-Up-Campaign0004-300x225.jpgMayoral Candidate, Yolanda Schakron today teamed up with Port Loyola standard bearer for the P.U.P., Gilroy Usher Senior, and took to the streets of south side Belize City for a cleanup campaign. The two political aspirants along with several supporters and volunteers were working along the stretch of Central American Boulevard from its junction with Fabers Road to Caesar Ridge Road and into the Jane Usher Boulevard area. They were out cutting grass and cleaning the drains an area, which Usher Senior says has been neglected for nine years by the City Hall. Schakron says the cleanup addresses the complaints by residents in the area.

“We are just out here to clean up the area. The drains are very dirty. The south side of Belize City has been very neglected by this City Council. People have been complaining to us, telling us about the drain. We see an outbreak of dengue in this area; I’ve seen homes where the entire family has dengue. So we are just trying to help out as much as we can. So that is our plan.”

“This initiative has been undertaken to promote civic pride in Port Loyola. We decided on this cleanup campaign for two public purposes. One, to show that we are not afraid; we the leaders of the People’s United Party I Port Loyola, we are not afraid to come out and get the work done for betterment for the area. And two, to show to the area that from day one, a People’s Untied Party City Council along with my support in Port Loyola will work to make sure that a fair amount of the dollars are spent to bring about upliftment in Port Loyola because we heard about the millions and millions of dollars that City Council has spent. But when you look in Port Loyola, for example, this same area that we have cleaned today, the drainage; this area has been neglected for the past nine years. And so we want to remind people that better will come with the P.U.P. and also to remind them that don’t be distracted by all the glitter and the signs, the music, the free thing, the money and the giveaway and all of those things. Bear in mind the neglect of their community when they go to the polls on March the fourth and vote for betterment because that is what we are all about—betterment for the people after the elections.”

“Given the political arena, how do you respond to the criticism that this initiative is pretty much a political show and two weeks away from election, this is just pretty to incite more support or to garner support from people?”

Yolanda Schakron

“Well of course you will get that criticism and we understand. But Mister Darrell Bradley of course will attack us and he gets very upset, but it is not that. It’s about seeing the needs of the people. I can tell you I had wanted to run before. I only campaigned in Lake I and now I am in the entire Belize City and Mister Gilroy Usher has done this before and we decided now that we will come in. and we have other things planned for this area before elections. We see the need and we decided so let us do it. I have been someone who has always been active in the community; it is not about just because dah elections.”
