Yesterday a group led by the People’s National Party in Toledo held a demonstration at the site of ongoing street works in that municipality. PNP Mayoral candidate Will Maheia told our correspondent Paul Mahung that while they appreciated the street upgrade it should be done properly. Maheia said they had spoken to a number of contractors who said it did not make any sense to build a street without putting steel in it. According to Maheia the street works is a temporary fix because when big trucks start running on it, the streets will break apart. Today Love News spoke with contractor Francis Cisco Woods who told us that contrary to Maheia’s comments, the streets are being built to last.
CONTRACTOR, FRANCISCO WOODS
“The streets there seems to be a concern that there is no steel in the street and we just wanted to set the record straight that that is an international design it is used all over Central America and the US, there is steel at all the joints and the concrete is of very high strength, 5,000 psi strength. We are so confident in the design that we offered a five year guarantee in workmanship and that design. So it is an excellent design it is very simple. If you put steel it would just be a waste of money. One example that we always refer to and its the first time we did it was the piece of concrete street that goes up to the San Ignacio Hotel that was done 25 years ago using that same design, it wasn’t the strength concrete that we are using now we are using about 50% more stronger concrete so it is of a good design and it is guaranteed. I just wanted to set the record straight and let folks know in PG town that they are getting very good quality streets, all the concrete testing is done. Every day when they pour they do a concrete sample to make sure that we are getting the required strength, before we even put down concrete we make sure that the base is compacted properly and we have a strength there too so there is definitely nothing to worry about as far as that street goes.”
