Orange Walk Mayoral candidate Kevin Bernard has earned the singular distinction of being the only P.U.P. Mayor in the country. He won by only a narrow margin, but along with four councillor candidates, managed to withstand a red tsunami. Today, with the dust cleared from Wednesday’s war, we got a comment from Bernard, who took great offence at the Prime Minister’s podium promise that if Orange Walk voted red, he would take them to the Promised Land.

Kevin Bernard, Mayor, Orange Walk Town

“I think that is very irresponsible of the Prime Minister, to go on the rostrum and to say things like this because at the end of the day he must remember that he was elected by the masses to govern this country and to assist municipalities. He is not there to say if you vote for his party then you get help. Then what are you telling the people of Orange Walk. And that is why the people of Orange Walk sent a message to him and his party…that we are not going to be intimidated and we are not going to be bribed. What I can tell you, because the U.D.P. in Orange Walk keep saying that I keep harping that I don’t need Dean Barrow. But I am telling him that I don’t need you, but we will demand from you that you bring to Orange Walk the necessary resources that are needed so that we can move this town forward as well.”

“Sir, I missed the first question, but I will move on from that. now that you have two U.D.P. town councillors, will that maybe help you because the U.D.P. has inroads into your council and perhaps now that will make your job easier cause you can talk to your U.D.P. co-councilors and tell them, bwai we need lee help with this; try get yo government fi help noh?”

Kevin Bernard

“I don’t know how that will help me or that will help our council, but I can tell you that I am prepared to work with everybody. I am prepared to work with them and I’ve said it before Jules….I have said it to the government as well. I am prepared to work with them to see how we could…because at the end of the day, we must work together to build out town, to build our country. So I don’t see that there will be any problem. The problem we are having is that the government refuses to help the municipality because we have always gone to support the People’s United Party.”

Bernard says that his narrow margin of victory was influenced by the prodigious spending of money by the U.D.P.
