Forty-two-year-old Belize City resident Patrick Castillo is currently detained by police after a grisly chopping murder on Wednesday night. According to reports, an altercation between Castillo and his stepson, twenty-year-old Jose Maderos, resulted in Maderos sustaining multiple chop wounds and bleeding to death in the upstairs flat of his home at number nine Kut Avenue. Mike Rudon has the story, but we warn you that some of the images are disturbing, so you may want to exercise parental discretion.

This home on Kut Avenue was the scene of a brutal murder on Wednesday night. The investigation is still in its preliminary stage as Police try to determine the events which led up to forty-two year old Patrick Castillo chopping his stepson Jose Maderos to death.

Supt. Hilberto Romero, Head, Crimes Investigation Branch

“At nine p.m. yesterday, Police visited number nine Kut Avenue, where they found the lifeless body of a male person identified as Jose Maderos, twenty years of age, with multiple chop wounds. He was found inside an upstairs house and he was confirmed dead at the scene. Our investigation revealed that he had a dispute with his father, Patrick Castillo Sr., and at some point somebody pulled a machete and that resulted in Jose Maderos being chopped several times to the body.”

The upstairs flat of the home is literally splattered with blood, which testifies to the ferocity of the attack on Maderos. Rosa Maderos, Castillo’s common-law wife and the mother of the victim, was at work when she got the news. She says her son died a terrible death for no good reason, just minutes after he came home from work.

Patrick Castillo

The couple had been having serious problems for some time, and Rosa Maderos said that just Wednesday she told Castillo that they should end the relationship. She couldn’t get along with Castillo’s daughter, who lives with them, and Castillo could not get along with her children. The terrible attack was witnessed by those children, and by the victim’s girlfriend and two year old baby.

Rosa Mauricio Maderos

“My daughter, sixteen years old, my next one thirteen years old, my daughter-in-law sixteen years…the one weh live with my son, and my lee grandbaby two years old. My daughter thirteen got chopped on her hand too, cause the man spin the machete like he crazy he cut my daughter hand bad too. After he done kill my son, he come out to sit down in this spot and seh you done have enough? After he done kill my son he seh you done have enough? He sit down right here, and he had a lot of blood on his hands. When I see him at the hospital with the doctor deh try clean he. I seh you murder my son, and he no seh anything. He noh open his mouth for nothing.”

When Castillo was detained outside the home, he had cut wounds on his wrists. Police aren’t sure at this time if those wounds were inflicted during the altercation or self-inflicted after the murder. But all that matters little to Rosa Maderos at this time. She is just struggling to cope with the death of her son at the hands of the man she lived with for ten years.

Rosa Mauricio Maderos

“Sometimes I feel like I wah disappear from this country, because this country tek my son. I bring my son small from Guatemala…he one year that time I bring him to this country. Every time he tell me he done feel Belizean because I grow in this country, this da my country. I tell ah I wah send you back to Guatemala with my family. He seh no mami this is my country. I lef everything inna di Police hands. I noh wah see anymore this man weh murder my son. I noh wah see he. Everything done dead in my heart if I felt anything fu him…ih done dead. When my son dead…ih gone everything.”

The victim is believed to have been drinking at the time of the altercation, and Police are trying to determine if that was a factor. Castillo is allegedly claiming self-defence, and Police have contacted the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions for advice before any charges are laid. Mike Rudon for News Five.
