Mayor Darrell Bradley has been anointed the U.D.P. candidate in Caribbean Shores, no messy convention, no nasty mudslinging, no big spending and no bloodshed – just…well for lack of a better word – suavecito. The announcement came from U.D.P. leader Dean Barrow at the Party’s headquarters today. Flanked by both Santiago “Santino” Castillo Junior and Bradley, Barrow told the gathering that Castillo had made the decision, on his own, to depart without any muss or fuss and to leave the gate wide open for Bradley.

“I just want to make clear that it is a decision he’s come to entirely on his own. He and I have been talking right along generally, but this was Santi’s decision to make, and in fact it is a decision that he and he alone made, no doubt after consultation with his daughter and with his mother and with other members of his family. We are of course pleased that there is not any longer the need for a contested convention because inevitably these conventions are divisive.”

Santiago “Santino” Castillo, Stepping Down in Caribbean Shores

“It was solely my decision. I called the Prime Minister on Tuesday afternoon to tell him of my decision. And when I looked at everything that was on the board the main reason I made this decision is because as he said, a convention in Caribbean Shores, and I had a personal meeting with the Mayor this morning, and I feel, and I still feel that that would have been like a Manny Pacquiao/Mayweather fight. I told him that, speaking of boxing. But I was not prepared to put my Party through that situation, giving the People’s United Party the edge, so to speak, in that regard. That would have divided the Party and it would have taken a long time to heal the wounds, and so after discussing it with my family I felt that the noble thing to do was to in fact step down and give the seat to Darrell.”

“I must say that I have caught at a little bit of a loss because the Prime Minister called me yesterday evening and indicated that we were going to have a press conference this morning. I scrambled to see if I could get the attendance of people who are closest to me…my family, people who are supporters – and these are the people who we want to move forward in Caribbean Shores with…it’s an exciting time, we’re on the ground working, and all of this is really about people. It’s about making sure that the United Democratic Party continues to do the great work that it has been doing under the leadership of the Rt. Honourable Prime Minister.”
