Fourteen new tablets were handed over to the Hattieville Government School by the People’s United Party today. But while the gesture was welcomed, it is the information on that portable storage device that will be used to enhance the educational experience. The teachers at the institution will use the vast amount of electronic information to assist with their lessons, as opposed to sifting through cumbersome books and files. Following a brief handing over ceremony, News Five spoke with Standard Four Teacher, Imam Neal and P.U.P. Area Rep, Dolores Balderamos Garcia about how the tablets will be put to use.

Dolores Balderamos Garcia, P.U.P. Area Rep., Belize Rural Central

“Naturally you are aware of the People’s United Party’s position in relation to the use of technology for education. And so Mister Yasser Musa and a few others suggested that we donate the tablets to the school, but in particular to the teachers, so that the teachers as nation builders can share that technology. Now naturally, they couldn’t give a table for every student, but if they use it per classroom, basically the key to the donation today is what is on the flash drive; what is on the little magic device, like I said. We believe in using the technology and as you know our party’s position is the technology and the creativity using them together. Now on that flash drive, there are five hundred books including encyclopedia’s including natural history, including science and all types of things that are of interests to children. The other day I was looking through one of the books and really it shows you about prehistoric human beings and so I think the children will really love it.”

“The teachers can use the tablets in downloading programs and games to assist with their lessons. For example, I myself use technology every day in my classroom by downloading videos, songs, concepts and with that the children learn better because they more intertwined with their learning; it is more exciting…it is not that paper and pen. So I believe that tablets will be a very…assets to our schools because teachers would like to bring their laptops, but it is too heavy. So having the tablets here at school, we can just bring our flash drives with the maters and we can connect and let’s go.”
