arlier this evening, Espat consulted with his legal advisors after reading the release issued by government clarifying the uses of Petrocaribe financing. This is in light of a lawsuit brought against the prime minister regarding the usage of the monies. According to Espat, the Finance and Audit Reform Act is explicit in language, stating that monies in excess of the prescribed ten million dollars need to be brought to the House of Representatives for approval.

“Two things, in the accountability part it justifies the fact that we need to have the information, government need to tell us what they are doing. So this highlights that fact that there is a lack of. I just spoke to one of our attorney after seeing the release Ministry of Finance sent out justifying what they did. Our attorneys are looking closely at it. But what they are telling us is that the finances and audit act which I have been reviewing does say that they can’t use the money as they please. And it doesn’t spell it out meaning it can’t be done for a day, it can’t be done for 5 days, it can’t be done for 5 months or a year. So we are looking at that part of it cause we also believe that this is also not legal in what they are doing,. But the main thing is the lack of trust and the lack of credibility. We are now starting to get more and more information to the contrary of what the Prime Minister is saying.”
