This year’s P.S.E. Results would prove that sixty-eight percent of the students in the top twenty-five were from private institutions. So is it that private institutions are providing a higher level of education when compared to public schools?

Nelson Longsworth, Director, Examination Unit, MoE

“Ever since yeah, the primary schools have always outperformed all the other schools. There are a few bright spots here and there with individual students. And it goes to show that education is not just a school; it is what else that supports the system. And generally you would find in some schools they have more resources, better accountability of learning and all those elements that would drive better performance. The primary schools have definitely learnt how to reach the standard that we are expecting; that the P.S.E. is testing…it is clear. When we look at the Belize District where there is the most private schools, they do top the list in this district.”

“Is it really the test, the exam itself that is at a higher level than what the students are learning inside the classrooms?”

Nelson Longsworth

“I would be got differ. We do have a very rigid and tight quality control system in terms of the development of the exam. The standard that we maintain is based on the curriculum so the learning expectations or the learning outcomes are directly from the curriculum. The students are just simply not prepared sufficiently to be able to master the difficult papers. And it is not at the standard six level that will solve those problems. It is definitely rooted in the entire system where students have to start learning; learning how to read, developing their numeracy skills from infant one and then it makes…there is where you will start to see the bigger improvements.”

“So application?”

Nelson Longsworth

“Application…it’s being able to apply their understanding.”

The results are the preliminary or draft results of the 2015 P.S.E. Results. A two-week period is given for the various schools to query the grades.
