Leonard Nunez & Hallet King

Just minutes before seven tonight, the ministry of national security just finally sent out a release on the death of Hilberto Sotz. It states that “the Hon. John Saldivar, Minister of National Security, condemns the alleged use of unwarranted personal violence by PC Leonard Nunez and PC Hallet King and the apparent neglect of duty by all other Police Officers that were at the Caye Caulker Police station at the time of the incident; who seemly stood by and were slovenly inactive during this entire ordeal. The Minister and Ministry of National Security assure the family as well as the citizenry that a thorough and transparent criminal, as well as internal investigation will be conducted and all those that are found culpable will be prosecuted to the full extent of the law.”  News Five has also obtained a copy of a statement provided by Police Constable Hallet King in the aftermath of Sotz’s death.  In the duty report, King chronicles what transpired prior to and at the time of Sotz’s apprehension in Caye Caulker, stating that the eighteen-year-old was taken into custody in the presence of his father.  The pair was riding a golf cart when police approached Sotz after visiting the Black Neighborhood.  King goes on to state that while he was present during the interview he observed Ketchi, as Sotz is also known, having a hard time breathing.  Twenty-five seconds later, he reportedly fell unconscious with his head hanging forward and tilted to the left.  According to King, he, along with PC Nunez then transported him to the health center in Caye Caulker where they explained to the doctor and nurse what transpired at the station.
