Joaquin ‘El Chapo’ Guzman, or Shorty, as he is otherwise known, was first arrested in 1993, broke free in 2001 by reportedly taking cover inside a laundry cart and remained on the lam until 2014 when he was caught inside a Mexican beach resort. At the time of his arrest, Guzman was worth an estimated one billion dollars and was described by Forbes as a self-made tycoon who enriched himself, as well as his criminal organization from the sale and trafficking of drugs to the United States. Undoubtedly, El Chapo has proven himself well-connected, successfully bribing corrupt Mexican officials into facilitating his second escape.

“We’re dealing here with a high profile criminal. This is his second escape from a maximum security facility in his home country. Should for whatever or by whatever reason he makes it across into Belize, are we prepared to take on the likes of the Sinaloa Cartel?”
Ret. Col. George Lovell, C.E.O., Ministry of National Security
“Well, not even Mexico seems to be capable of taking on the likes of El Chapo and his cartel. And so if we were to get any information I can assure you the first thing we will try and do is to get the Mexicans informed and to try and see how best we can hand him over to them if we have him in custody. If it’s just information, we will share those information with him simply because of what you have just said. This will not be an easy task for us, he is rich, he is wealthy, he is influential and it has been proven in Mexico that he is very difficult to be kept even in their maximum security prisons. I can tell you too that we have been talking with our friends from the U.S. also and they are even better equipped to deal with these things than us so there will be communications with the relevant authorities that can handle these types of criminals to deal with the likes of an El Chapo. Should, and I say should, because there is no indication and I wouldn’t the public to believe that he is in fact heading towards Belize because there is no indication to suggest that just yet.”
El Chapo Guzman’s great escape involved the excavation of a mile-long tunnel which runs beneath the heavily guarded prison facility in Altiplano. The passageway leads directly to his cell where he absconded on Saturday under the pretense of taking a shower.
