An accident in Spanish Lookout claimed the life of a detective attached to the Special Branch in Belmopan. San Ignacio police were called out to the Spanish Lookout Road sometime between seven-thirty and eight on Thursday night following a report of a fatal traffic accident which cut short the life of Police Corporal Carlos Orio who served twelve years in the force. As the force grieves his death Orio is described as an exemplary officer, who was twice recognized in 2014 for dedication and efficiency. Here’s what police observed following the report of the fatality.
On the Phone: ASP Reymundo Reyes, Deputy O.C., Cayo Police Formation
“As a result, police visited the scene where, on arrival, they saw a four door blue Toyota car with Cayo license plate, on the right hand side of the road when travelling from an east to west direction. At the time, the driver of the motor vehicle and other passengers transported to hospital, Western Regional Hospital, namely, Mr Carlos Orio, thirty three years old, a police officer of Belmopan address. He was pronounced dead on arrival around eight thirty five p.m. The other two passengers, Mr Eddie De La Rosa thirty nine year old Belizean of Buena Vista Village and Elmer Duarte is twenty seven of UnitedVille Village. They were transported to La Loma Luz Hospital where they complained of minor aches on their bodies and they were treated and released. The information is that Mr Carlos Orio along with the other passengers were heading towards the Spanish Look Out community when it appears that the driver lost control of the vehicle causing the vehicle to collide into a lamppost and that is how he sustained a cut wound behind the left side of his head and that apparently caused his death.”
Late this evening the Superintendent Marco Vidal of Special Branch released a statement via text saying that Orio was an outstanding officer and an asset to Special Branch and to the Department as a whole. According to Vidal, Orio was humble and friendly, always willing to assist and generous with his time almost to a fault. Says the statement, “We are trying to come to terms with this tremendous loss and we share the grief of his wife and beautiful children, to whom he was so dedicated and who he has left behind. The death of Carlos is our collective loss. I speak both as his administrative superior and as his friend.”
