Hubert Elrington
The group which succeeded in planting a flag on Sarstoon Island today is now being lauded by Prime Minister Barrow. In a press conference last Wednesday, the PM changed his view on the BTV and now claims that their actions are not only commendable, but even inspirational. Hubert Elrington is a former U.D.P. Minister and the brother of current Foreign Minister Wilfred Elrington. He has a very different view of the Belize Territorial Volunteers, and wasn’t afraid to share that view when he was a guest on the Dickie Bradley Special on Monday night.

“This is the thing that puzzles me…how any Belizean in his sane mind could want to provoke such a fierce country. Guatemala is not the kind of country you fool around with…traditionally brutal and militaristic – has threatened to invade this country over and over and over. In 1977, I think the British had to rush down the Ark Royal which was their largest aircraft carrier with all those Harriers and things to forestall what was an invasion. So why people seem to believe that Belize can fight Guatemala. I don’t think that Wil Maheia or De la Fuente honestly believe that Belize can stand up to Guatemala and fight. Now if you don’t go for settlement in a peaceful way, you will go for settlement by fighting, and you are bound to lose, and you are going to lose within half an hour. You stand no chance at all. There’s absolutely no way that Belize can fight Guatemala. Whoever thinks that is possible has to be insane.”
