Otto Perez Molina

Former President, Otto Perez Molina, who is in lockdown tonight before another Court appearance on Friday, was in Belize in December 2014. That’s when Belize and Guatemala officially signed off on thirteen bi-lateral agreements, which until today have not been implemented. PM Barrow says that because of the relationship established between the countries during the tenure of Perez Molina, he is sorry to see him go.

Prime Minister Dean Barrow

“I was very pleased with the way he behaved towards Belize during his tenure because we all know his history…that he was Chief of Staff or certainly extremely high in the Guatemalan military. I had feared that as President he would have been belligerent, hawkish, irredentist. I was absolutely pleased that was not the case. Both in terms of the interpersonal relations between us and in terms of the institutional arrangements he was a gentleman. He was restrained. He was responsible. He appeared to me not one-dimensional. He struck me, and he said it, as somebody who absolutely recognized and welcomed the separate reality of Belize while still insisting that they had their claim and their point of view. So from that point of view I am sorry to see him go. I understand the internal dynamics and I make no judgment as to whether or not he’s guilty of anything.”
