Police believe that they have the right man in custody, and that they have connected all the dots to result in a conviction. In fact, they may even have the murder weapon, but that won’t be determined until further ballistics examination is done.

Sr. Supt. Chester Williams, Regional Commander, Eastern Division South

“What we did is to follow the procedures which had been set in place by the D.P.P., which is that when we record statements in relation to major incidents, that we must ensure that the statements are recorded in the presence of  a Justice of the Peace, and so the statement from the witness was done in the presence of a Justice of the Peace, and therefore I do not anticipate that we would have a situation where the witness might go to Court and say I did not give the statement to the Police. There were independent persons around who can attest to the fact that yes indeed the Police got the statement from the person on that date and that the person gave the statement voluntarily.”

Reporter

“In terms of any other evidence apart from the witness statement, have you all been able to come closer to the weapon used in the murder?”

Sr. Supt. Chester Williams

“I will not comment on that at this point either.”

Reporter

“So at this point you all do not have the weapon?”

Sr. Supt. Chester Williams

“No! We cannot say that we have the weapon at this time. We have some firearms in custody yes, and we will continue to do ballistic testing to see if we can make a match in relation to the shells found on the scene reference the Kareem Clarke murder.”

Reporter

“Is this in any way related to the weapon found in the big building on Vernon Street? Might this be the weapon?”

Sr. Supt. Chester Williams

“It could be the weapon.”
