Tertiary Institution Opens In Benque Viejo Del Carmen, Belize

<p>Last month the Government of Belize gave the green light to John Paul the Second Junior College to open its doors to provide secondary education in Benque Viejo del Carmen Town. The Junior College opened its doors last week Monday with an enrollment of thirty students. According to the Dean of the Junior College, David Ruiz, the institution will offer three specialties focused on the liberal arts.<br />DAVID RUIZ<br />“The whole concept of junior college in Benque goes back about ten years ago from one of the pastors in Benque. John Paul the Second Junior College is unique in the sense that it is fully liberal arts. The idea has matured over the years and about five years ago we carried out a market study with the intent to find out if there is a need for it in the Cayo west area and we found out that the people were receptive and that is how we went ahead and did it. The core program is liberal arts; it’s different from other junior colleges as we have forty five hours of core subjects which is fully the liberal arts program. This first year, everyone has to do the core and in the third semester we will start offering the majors. We are trying to be competitive and we cannot go lower than the thirty dollars per credit hour which is the standard for all the Associate degree programs and given the fact that we are not a grant-aided school, we have a flat fee of one thousand two hundred and fifty dollars per semester.” </p>
