There are two murders to report in tonight’s newscast, both coming out of the west and which occurred within less than twenty-four hours of each other. The first occurred early Saturday morning, when a retired Canadian national, who had just relocated from Belmopan to Buena Vista Village, outside of Spanish Lookout, was brutally killed. We’ll have that later in the newscast. But the other murder occurred later that day just before eleven p.m. Fifteen year old Alex Vasquez of Cristo Rey Road in Santa Elena was stabbed and died within minutes by another minor, a seventeen year old, in downtown San Ignacio in front of Venus Hotel on Burns Avenue. The incident was witnessed by many who ran to Vasquez’s aid. News Five’s Duane Moody was in Cayo and has a report on that murder.

Two murders occurred in San Ignacio over the weekend and less than twenty-four hours apart. Fifteen year old Alex Vasquez was mortally stabbed to the left side of the chest by a seventeen year old on Burns Avenue just before eleven on Saturday night.
Inspector Reymundo Reyes, Deputy O.C., San Ignacio Police
“San Ignacio Police visited an area in front of Venus Hotel where on arrival they saw a male person bleeding from the left side of his chest. He was immediately rushed to the San Ignacio hospital but died on arrival at the hospital.”
The seventeen year old of San Ignacio has since been detained in connection with the homicide. The father of the accused says that his son told him that he stabbed Vasquez in self-defense.
“I know that mi son tell me everything weh happen with he. He said that the bally mi di threaten him and ih mi done have wah beef with my son and ih mi stab my son like one time. And my son mi report it, but the police dehn neva do nothing to that. And then it happen again. Ih tell me that the bwai threaten ahn again outta town yah. It happen that he…ih say the bwai haul wa knife at him and he say that he just retaliate and he mi have to defend ihself. I say my sojn noh perfect, but ih do what ih…try and defend ihself.”
According to Inspector Reymundo Reyes, the murder was due to a misunderstanding between the deceased and accused a month ago.
“This is an ongoing rival that these two guys had. It is something that stemmed up with fights. The young man is alleging that a month ago, he was attacked by the deceased and he was injured with stab wounds to that effect but no report was made to the police. In fear of that, when they met on Saturday, the twenty-first, when they met by the welcome center; it stemmed up again—the throwing of phrases and so forth. And it end up in front of Venus where the young bwai was approached and stabbed.”

Later in the newscast, we will have the report on the murder of retired Canadian national.
