Tonight, News Five has confirmed that Dr. Louis Zabaneh, President of Galen University, has demitted office effective immediately. Zabaneh’s abrupt departure comes on the heels of a recent decision taken by majority shareholders of the institution to appoint a new president unbeknownst to the board of directors, as well as the Minister of Education, Patrick Faber. It is uncertain what may have precipitated the backdoor decision but Faber told News Five that Doug Singh, chairman of the Belize Social Security Board and Citrus Products of Belize Limited, has been appointed as the new president of Galen University.
Since assuming control of the privately owned tertiary institution in December 2009, Zabaneh has been instrumental in shaping the direction and academic offerings of Galen University, forming international partnerships with universities in the United States and Canada. While Zabaneh was listed as a minority shareholder in Galen, it is unclear at this point what becomes of his six percent ownership in the university.
