Fans of Cirque du Soleil will soon not need to travel to Las Vegas to catch a show of this world-class aero-acrobatic-costume spectacle - it is coming to Mexico. The Yucatan's Mexican Riviera. Cancun, to be exact. An easy bus ride from Belize.
Grupo Vidanta, the developer behind Mexico's uber-glam Grand Luxxe resorts, is creating the new Cirque du Soleil Theatre, which will debut its inaugural show JOYÀ on November 8.
JOYÀ (means jewel in Spanish) follows the life of an alchemist and his granddaughter on their mystical journey through the mangrove forest with Mexican-inspired imagery such as the monarch butterfly, millions of which migrate to that country's mountain forests each November for hibernation, according to an official press release. The show intertwines Maya culture imagery with a fast-paced music track apparently based on the Jarana Yucateca that is unequivocally representative of one of the traditional genres of Mexican music.
The Canada-based company is setting a 600 seat venue for its Yucatan base of operations at the Carretera Cancún -Tulum, Chacalal, Quintana Roo, Mexico Highway, coordinates: 20°46'07.7"N 86°57'51.0"W
