The concern over the disappearance of Ramon Cervantes Sr. has been overwhelming. As we told you, the family believes that the elderly man was overpowered at his cane-field and then taken away by unknown persons. Cervantes is a prominent businessman in Orange Walk Town, and also served as Mayor of that municipality from 1989-1991 and Senator from 1984-1989. Today, current Mayor Kevin Bernard told us that it is a travesty for something like that to happen in a community as tight-knit as Orange Walk.
Kevin Bernard, Orange Walk Mayor
“It saddens me to know that this thing has come to touch our hometown. I can say that I am very touched by that. It is very sad to know that something of this nature can happen to anyone. Knowing Mister Ramon, he is a very well, humble individual; the family is a very close-knit family so I want to offer my support to them as well as the Mayor of the Town. But at the same time, I want to say that it is a sad day for us in Orange Walk because apart from Mister Cervantes yes being a P.U.P. as you said, he is a Belizean, he is an Orange Walkeno and we as family members and people of own community, we need to look after each other. From my own perspective, it goes further as well. The crime in this country has come to a new level and I think it is something that we need to step up as a country. I think that the police department and not only the police department, but the policy makers need to look at some of these things as well on how we strengthen these types of laws in our country. I know that it is always difficult, because you never know when something like this will occur. Criminals have all kinds of different minds and we are hoping that the best comes out of this situation and that he is returned safely. Fearing for the worst, I think that is the sad part of it. You never know what this could lead to.”
Up to news time tonight there was nothing new to report on the whereabouts of Ramon Cervantes Sr.
