Ramon Cervantes

It is exactly one week since seventy-one year old Ramon Cervantes Senior was reported missing, and three days after his decomposed body was discovered in a shallow grave on a farm off the Honey Camp road in the outskirts of Walk Town. There have been multiple detentions by Police, and reports of a ringleader on the run. But despite allegations of a confession, nobody has been charged or formally arraigned for the kidnapping and gruesome murder of Cervantes. Today, for the second day, a throng of angry residents waited outside the Orange Walk Police Station and Magistrate Court. Mike Rudon was in Orange Walk and files this story.

Orange Walk Police say that they handed over all statements and evidence to the Director of Public Prosecutions on Monday morning. The DPP, Cheryl-lyn Vidal, says she got those documents very late on Monday and is hopeful that a decision on a way forward would be handed down today. That is what these residents were hoping for…in their words, justice for Mr. Ramon. For the second day in a row they stood outside in the sun, waiting for a look at those Police say plotted and carried out the kidnapping, and cold, vicious murder of businessman and farmer Ramon Cervantes Sr.

Police have remained cagey in the information released to the public. At a press conference on Monday, Northern Zone Commander Senior Superintendent Joseph Myvette would stick to the line that the investigation is ongoing. We have confirmed that at least twelve persons were detained for questioning, including two Police officers. We have also confirmed that Police are looking for one man, a deportee from the US.

But why would somebody kidnap Ramon Cervantes Sr. and beat him to death one day after? That is the piece of the puzzle that remains missing. Cervantes was allegedly found handcuffed and shackled, with tape over his eyes and his head bashed in.Cervantes-UP0001-150x150.jpg

Today the Police operation remained intense, with at least four CIB vehicles in constant movement at the Orange Walk Police Station. A Senior Police Officer today would say only that investigations in a very complicated case are ongoing, and it is turning into, quote unquote…a tangled web.

At four this evening the magistrate’s court was closed, and residents can only hope that on Wednesday, those accused of the heinous crime will be escorted to court to answer for their alleged crimes.
