And since the Finance Department will be under scrutiny, so will the former Director of Finance Carlos Perera, the man who orchestrated the purchasing of those x-ray machines. Perera’s name has come up numerous times before, and it was no secret that the Board of Governors wanted him out. Today, K.H.M.H. Board Chair, Chandra Nisbet-Cansino, told News Five that she can’t link Perera to an ongoing financial crisis at the K.H.M.H. just yet, as more information will only be available after the investigation is concluded.

“What I can tell you is that Mr. Perrera is no longer at the KHMH and we have advertised the post. We have received some applications and we will review those next week.”

“Ma’am there had been reports, unconfirmed, that the Board was at odds with Mr. Perrera for various reasons…there were trips apparently taken without authorization and different things with a financial undertone. Could you confirm or deny those reports?”

“There have been concerns, yes. Some of the questions have been answered and some of them have not. And so we mutually agreed to terminate his employment.”

“Ma’am can you tell us if the KHMH is experiencing short-term financial difficulties? We are told that at this moment the hospital is having difficulties meeting its payroll.”

“It was I think a couple months ago that it was brought to our attention that the subvention that we were receiving might not cover the expenses that we had, and that was immediately addressed at the Ministry of Finance with support from the Ministry of Health and an increase in our subvention was given retroactive to April and it should run for the rest of this year. So yes there was a concern…I wouldn’t call it a crisis…but there was a concern. It was addressed and we have that additional funding until the end of the financial year.”

“Is any part of that financial crisis related to the departure of the former Director of Finance?”

“I cannot say that at this time. Like I said there are concerns of expenditures. That matter is under investigation at this time. Perhaps after the investigation is finished I would be able to give you more information.”
