The mysterious circumstances surrounding the death of sixty-two-year-old Alfonso Manzanero, a retiree of Belmopan, has raised more questions than answers for his grief-stricken family.  On Sunday morning, Manzanero was reportedly driving his silver Mitsubishi SUV when he lost control of the vehicle and landed in a ditch not far from his Nanche Street address.  Police report that he was being assisted by several individuals when a rope attached to a Ford pickup suddenly snapped, causing the vehicle to run him over.  Badly injured, Manzanero was immediately rushed to the Western Regional Hospital where he later died while undergoing treatment.  While that is the official account coming out of the Belmopan Police Department, Manzanero’s family strongly suspects foul play and residents of the Garden City are also theorizing that he may have been followed on his way home.  Today, we spoke with Inspector Dennis Myles, who says that the matter is being investigated as a fatal mishap.

Insp. Dennis Myles, Acting O.C., Belmopan Police Formation

“Around 1:15 Sunday morning, the twentieth of July, Mr. Manzanero was driving his Mitsubishi SUV in the direction near North Ring Road when he accidentally lost control and his vehicle ran into a drain.  As a result he had about three citizens who went and assisted him, assisted by pulling out Mr. Manzanero’s vehicle and in the process of pulling out Mr. Manzanero’s vehicle that was when Mr. Manzanero, who was standing beside his vehicle, the rope that was pulling out Mr. Manzanero’s vehicle suddenly gave way and the vehicle then went and hit Mr. Manzanero.  He was then transferred to the Western Regional Hospital by the same person that was assisting him and he died whilst undergoing treatment.”

“Do you know what the extent of his injuries were?”

Inspector Dennis Myles

“Well what I observed was just injuries to his face and the front portion of his body.”

“This seems to be a freak accident.  Do you know if there is any kind of prosecution that can be brought against the individual who was rendering assistance?”

Inspector Dennis Myles

“Well what the police will be doing, we are investigating the matter and treating it as a traffic accident and we will compile a file and send the file to the Director of Public Prosecution and she will then direct us as to what directions should be taken.”

Manzanero’s family declined to comment on record, except to say that they strongly believe that the account reported to police is rather questionable since they have been told otherwise.
