Errol Elrington

The Prime Minister hosted a marathon press briefing today on the heels of a one hour televised interview on Sunday with banker Steve Duncan. PM Dean Barrow spoke on a long list of issues, but we start with his response to a question on Doctor Errol Elrington. Now, Wilfred ‘Sedi’ Elrington may be the Minister of Foreign Affairs and Attorney-General of Belize, but both his brother and nephew are fugitives from the U.S. being sought on serious criminal charges. The AG’s brother, Errol, is on the run from the U.S. after a warrant was issued for his arrest on charges of racketeering and medical fraud. It is alleged that he defrauded Medicare and Medicaid almost half a million U.S. dollars, billing them for services he did not perform. And then there’s the AG’s nephew, Hubert E. Elrington. His alleged crimes are more violent in nature. He is wanted on a thirteen-count felony indictment after a violent armed home invasion on the Ohio State University Campus in 2007. It is also believed that he ran to Belize to escape justice and is still here. News Five has confirmed that Dr. Errol Elrington IS here. In fact, Prime Minister Dean Barrow knows the fugitive well. At a three hour press briefing in Belize City today, the PM told the media that Dr. Elrington’s problems with the US authorities, and the warrant for his arrest, is not the government of Belize’s concern.

“Dr. Elrington I know I find or have found to be an extremely patriotic Belizean, an extremely likeable fellow…he always struck me as wanting to do good for people…and as honest. Now what sort of evidence US authorities might have I don’t know and I am not interested in finding out. If the United States wishes to extradite any Belizean citizen there is a treaty between our two countries that details the process that must be followed in order for this to be done. If such a request for extradition is ever made I this case by the United States authorities we will proceed in the way we always do in the cases or in the case of such requests.”

On Tuesday, attorney Hubert Elrington told News Five he cannot envision any situation where the extradition of Doctor Errol Elrington would be requested.
