On March 2, we told you of the heroic stance that a father of two young girls took against six men who were hurling obscene and disrespectful remarks at one of her daughters.  While admirable, the stance left the father, 42-year-old, Oscar Williams hospitalized with a swollen brain and memory loss.  The incident marked the start of a troublesome time for not only the father but his children and estranged wife, Yolanda Williams.  Since the attack on Williams, his wife, though separated, has been at his side at the hospital and so has his children but it hasn’t been an easy time for them, as the wife explained to us.

YOLANDA WILLIAMS

“Since then I would say that he is walking around moving about. The thing that still is not working to well is his memory. He doesn’t quite remember much he is living in the past. Every time that he thinks he is going to take his children to school and he needs to do this and he needs to make money to send his children to school so I don’t know if he will ever remember what he was living like before this happened but it is really hard.”

RENEE TRUJILLO

“Does he remember the incident that happened?”

YOLANDA WILLIAMS

“No, he doesn’t remember; he doesn’t even know why he is the way that he is.”

RENEE TRUJILLO

“What does the doctor say in terms of his full recovery and his memory fully coming back?”

YOLANDA WILLIAMS

“Well when he was at the hospital the doctor said that it would take probably month or two weeks for him to recover well but it’s not it’s taking much longer. I don’t know when and if he will ever recover his memory. They took the CATSCAN when they did the first one they said his brain was swollen and they saw spots of blood which wasn’t that dangerous because they were separated.”

According to Yolanda, they have made efforts to remind him of the incident that led to him being injured and hospitalized but those efforts have proven fruitless, as all it does is agitate an already fragile Williams.

RENEE TRUJILLO

“Have you ever sat down to them and explained to him what landed him in the hospital?”

YOLANDA WILLIAMS

“Yes, we tried to tell him what happened because sometimes he would sit down and tell the children that he is going to take them to school and they are still small my kids would always sit down and tell him ‘Dad we’re all grown up now, we are not small anymore. We are in high school’ and they would try to correct him every time he makes a mistake like call them different names or thinking that he needs to do something for them they will always try to correct him and remind him that it is all way past.”

RENEE TRUJILLO

“How does he respond, what does he say when you tell him what happened?”

YOLANDA WILLIAMS

“Sometimes he gets really upset, for example he would come out here and they would meet at the park because we live close to the park and when it is getting late and he would say it is time to go home and the kids would tell him to catch a taxi and go home and he would insist that they all needed to get home and they would tell him that they don’t live with him anymore and so that would get him really upset because he wants to take them with him.”

The incident has undoubtedly instilled some fears in the young girls as they are traumatized and are fearful that their father may encounter the men who had beaten their dad.  As it pertains to justice in this situation, the authorities have made no arrests in the case.

 YOLANDA WILLIAMS

“The main thing why we take him to different family members is so that they take care of him is because my daughters are very scared of what happened that time and they are afraid that the person who did it and would want to hurt him because they would feel that he remembers anything. It is really hard for my kids, they are not going to school much because of the same thing it is really hard for our two daughters. Police have been very responsive to us they come every time to check up on us and whenever they have time they text me sometimes and ask me how my husband is doing and how the girls are doing and have been very kind in helping us but no arrests because nobody knows anything.”

The incident occurred on Saturday, February 28 when Williams was with one of his daughters walking along the Southern Foreshore in the area of the former Bellevue Hotel when six men who were hanging out at an abandoned building began disrespecting the young girl.  Williams approached them asking that they respect his daughter but that led to violence as the six men pounced on Williams while his daughter ran home some blocks away to seek help.  By the time help came, Williams was unconscious with cut wounds to the back of his head.  Williams who lives on Antelope Street in Belize City had gone to pick up his daughters to take them to the Street Arts Festival when the incident occurred.  His estranged wife, Yolanda is currently looking out for him but due to financial constraints, she is unable to get a second opinion on his medical condition which has left him unable to continue his trade of woodcarving.  If you would like to reach out to Yolanda to render support of any kind, you can contact her 604-9790.
