As we said, the situation is politically charged because of the personalities involved, and also because when Alpuche Junior was detained he was driving a vehicle which belongs to Cervantes. Today Cervantes claimed that his political opponents are trying to tie him to the matter, while he maintains that he condemns in no uncertain terms any destruction of canefields.

“They are the ones that are trying to make a case of it, trying to implicate me but I will say categorically that I condemn and denounce the burning of cane fields and why there is a fundamental reason,. And it is because my family has been victims to the burning of cane fields; I have very god friends who have been victims of burning of cane fields. In fact last month seventeen acres of our cane field were burnt. So I totally condemn and denounce of burning cane fields and I will never engage in such an action, I would never insight or condone such an action, in fact I denounce such action of burning of cane fields.”
