On Monday two men were detained by Police on suspicion of burning canefields owned by ASR in the San Lorenzo area of Orange Walk Town. The detention is politically charged, since one of those men, Efrain Alpuche Jr., is closely linked to PUP politician Ramon Cervantes Jr. It is believed that there is evidence which links the two men to the fields which were burned. Police have determined that contrary to allegations, no shots were fired at ASR security guards by either of the men. Still, it is likely that both men will be charged and formally arraigned on Wednesday, and sources tell us that authorities will object to bail. Today Cervantes told the media that he spoke to a man who caught a ride with Alpuche from the village of San Antonio, so he finds the allegations very unlikely.

“Since it was around three-thirty, four I jumped in to go to orange walk to catch the auto parts store and so I questioned him, I said you came with Alpuche and he said yes, the police stopped them coming from San Antonio by the first curve after the bridge by the first culvert he said. That is where the police stopped and detained them. He told them that he was only getting a ride so they didn’t take him in. So that puts another angle to the story because what I was hearing up to last night was that the guys were caught red handed and they fired shots and the police set chase after them. Apparently that is not so the other issue is that shots were fired y those two guys and if it was those two guys that did what they are being accused of, it is highly improbable that those guys fired shots because everyone that has been in that pickup and several people can attest that there is no gun in the pick up or on the driver. I find that hard to believe because that is improbable because there were shots fired and it was highly improbable that or if there were any shots fired.”
