World Day Against Child Labour is observed on June twelve. It’s an opportunity for the globe to raise its voice against child labour and at the same time make a call for all children to have a right to education. In May, the Statistical Institute of Belize and the International Labour Organization launched the findings and final report of a 2013 National Child Activity Survey. The stats showed that Corozal has the highest employment rate for children, and the larger the household, the more likely children will have to find jobs, but still yet, the number of children employed has dropped significantly. And joining the call for Belize to be child-labour free at an event coinciding with the observance is Minister of Labour Godwin Hulse.

“It is not in your best interest not to be in school. You have to be in school. But it is in your best interest to help your mommy to wash up. It is in your best interest to help your mommy to clean the house. It is in the best interest, young man, to help your daddy clean the yard, and hopefully no garbage in your yard but at least if there is, you can help to pick up; it is in your best interest. It is also in your best interest if your daddy is a carpenter or a mechanic and you help him. Oh this dah weh mi daddy do and how he became a mechanic. But, it is not in your best interest when he sends you down to the neighbourhood garage for you to be working there on cars and for you to be paid five dollars. So, you see, we have to define what is in the best interest of the child. That’s why we say the principle is in the best interest of the child. That is defined clearly in the policy. It says, the best interest of the child shall be the paramount consideration in all actions concerning children in child labour. So, you should all remember, ‘no, no’ and what’s in the child’s best interest.”
